Abandon hope all who read this catalogue

2009_07110001

Reading Carol’s post at May Dreams Gardens about ordering bulbs made me realise that I havent received any bulb catalogues yet.  In the past I havent really engaged with bulbs but over the last 18 months or so I have really started to get enthusiastic.  This is mainly due to seeing all the gorgeous plants other bloggers have in their gardens.  Back in the spring I read an article about heritage daffodils in one of the gardening magazines and fell in love with them – I made a note to get some for next year.  So having read Carol’s post I got onto Avon Bulbs and ordered their catalogue.

It arrived this morning and my eldest was laughing at the strange squeaks of excitement I was making as I thumbed through the catalogue.  Not only is the catalogue filled with lots and lots of goodies the majority of which I havent come across but its presentation is lovely. Talk about a kid in a sweet shop!!!  I still want some heritage daffs and probably some Nectaroscordum and some species tulips but I am now completely enamoured of Bongardia Chrysognum (below)

It is described as a rare bulb with coppery yellow flowers and attractive grey green leaves marked with red.  It likes hot dry soil (not much chance of that with our rain).  Each bulb is £4.30!  This seems alot but then I think well I would pay that for a perennial plant.

Then there is Dichelostemma Ida-Maia and Epipactis Gigantea not to mention all the gorgeous Scillas and Irises.  There is even an autumn flowering snowdrop.

I havent even studied the catalogue yet but I strongly suspect that this is going to be expensive!!!!

  1. How I love Avon bulbs! You are a woman after my own heart.

Here’s a post I wrote including Narcisssus pseudonarcissus: http://ryans-garden.blogspot.com/2009/03/as-i-look-out-to-garden-on-overcast-day.html I’m not sure if this is what you meant by heritage but it is certainly my favourite species daff. I also have Epipactis gigantes which I bought at Gardener’s World Live and Epipactic palustris which I bought a few years ago. Fabulous plants!

  2. I know that feeling well. So many fantastic bulbs – so little cash! As a reality check, I always remind myself that I have to dig a hole for each of those bulbs. The thought of sore wrists usually helps me restrain myself.

  3. Yes I get carried away with bulb catalogues but then get distracted and end up not ordering them after all. Well perhaps just now and then.

  4. yep …. its gonna be expensive
