At last decent public planting

Back in August I joined in VP’s regular series of posts about public planting.  I wrote a post about the planting at my local library which I was very impressed with.  Of course being August the planting was looking especially good but I have continued to be impressed as the seasons have changed and we have now reached winter.

The border along the right of the path has been planted with Echinacea, Guara, grasses and other pairie type planting.  Whilst the perennials have died down the grasses are still looking good even in December.

You can see from this photo that the garden designer has used some good structural plants which are really coming into their own at the moment.  It will be interesting to see what happens in the spring – I do hope that there are some bulbs hidden away which will take the planting to another level.

I found this planting quite restful which is very appropriate, given that the town’s war memorial is the central focus. If only more authorities could be abit more open minded with their public planting!

  1. Great post in inspiring us all to be more active in our towns public gardens or what could be gardens. Love the grasses and do hope too there are bulbs sleeping beneath the surface.

Helen .. that is a wonderful planting indeed ! I am such a fan of ornamental grasses .. I can’t get enough of them in fact .. they do lend a wistful atmosphere to plantings at times ..

Very nice planting! It’s great when public spaces actually put thought into their planting… Anywhere that doesn’t use the dreaded Pelargoniums or impatens gets a thumbs up in my eyes!

We have a small space that I especially like near my work… Verbena Bonariensis and then… Dierama or Angel’s fishing rod… Now that’s my kind of planting!!! Highly impressed.

  4. That garden looks great. Winter is the time when truth will out, the exuberance of flowers being capable of hiding a multitude of design sins. Planting for winter interest, such as at your library is more important in your area, where you can actually see the garden in winter, as opposed to in the Chicago area, where it can be hard to find the garden beds, much less the plants in the middle of winter.

That really has weathered well hasn’t it? I found a roundabout outside a school in Bradford on Avon on Saturday with similar planting. It really does look good at this time of the year.

Thanks for another great contribution. Sorry for the delay in catching up with you – my internet access has been a real problem over the past couple of days :(

Wow, that looks great! I wish my local library would be willing to do something like that.
