Spring Jewels

At last there are signs of life in the garden.  More and more flowers are beginning to emerge although you have to look very closely to spot them.  My snowdrop collection is growing well, nothing fancy you understand just the regular snowdrops.  I  can’t believe the price that  some people will pay for one snowdrop bulb; I would be frightened to plant it in case it didn’t grow the following year.  Whilst the snowdrops are spreading,  the  winter aconite is taking longer to get going.

I bought these Iris Purple Gem last February and planted them up with some Anemone Blanda.  I then forgot all about them until I spotted the beautiful deep purple flowers at the weekend.  They are now in pride of place on the garden tabl where I can see them from the living room.

Yet another photo of the Iris Reticulata Harmony.  I bought these this year from Avon Bulbs - fantastic value only a few pounds for loads of corms.  I planted some in small terracota pots which I brought on in the greenhouse so I had Iris flowering in the house  back in February.  I also planted in the border and the rest in shallow pans.  They have been fantastic and by planting them in a range of locations has meant that the flowering has been extended.

Another real favourite of mine at the moment is this Hellebore which I have posted  about before and which I bought from Ashwood Nurseries two years ago on my birthday.  It has really bulked up and has masses of flowers on it this year.  I keep meaning to pick some of the flowers to float in a dish of water – ust do that tomorrow.

All these plants are planted in the border outside the living room window or in pots on the patio so whenever I  look out at the  garden, there is a little bit of spring jolliness to cheer me up.

Lucky, lucky you! Our gardens are still covered in snow that is, thankfully, melting fast with warmer than norm temps. Your hellebore is stunning!

  3. It’s just like they say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, I think spring flowers are the most important for the soul!

I like most spring flowers, but for some reason have never been too mad about Hellebores. Maybe it’s just the name.

    Thanks for the cheery photos!

What a delight to see spring popping out on your blog. I have a weakness for snowdrops and would plant drifts of them, if I could. Beautiful iris, too!

Jewels is the perfect description~I love the iris Purple Jem…It’s a beauty. I planted Miss Saigon and hope she’s as lovely as her photos! gail Ps I haven’t a snowdrop to speak of in my garden~I’ve never wanted to invest in them when I thought it was at best iffy for Nashville!

I fell in love with these Iris’ this year – in the space of two weeks I’ve managed to develop a problem! I bought mine in the green though (bad me)…

I planted that Iris reticulata ‘purple gem’ in my garden years ago, only one bulb…
In the first years, I had only one flower, but since a few years, they are spreading (and they even seem to self-sow, since the new flowers appear at some distance of the original plant, even at the other side of the garden path.)

  14. Anna says:

Mmmm – I like those deep purple irises – next spring :)

  15. Catherine says:

Lots of signs of Spring there! I love the Snowdrops and Aconite together.

  16. SummerHouseArt says:

The irises are beautiful, I love anything in purple but I really do like the look of that Hellebore too!

  17. easygardener says:

I have never got Iris reticulata to take in my borders – perhaps they don’t like light dry soil. I think I will try them in a pot as they are very attractive – such rich colours.

Love them all and have some of them, but not the winter aconite. I was never very sure whether I liked them but seeing yours next to the snowdrops has persuaded me. the colours of both irises are just beautiful!

  19. fairegarden says:

It is cheering to see all the beautiful signs of spring showing off for you, Helen. The Iris are so intricate, each a work of art.

You’ve got more colour in those four pics than I have in my entire garden at the moment.

  21. roundrockgarden says:

Not to repeat what everyone else has commented, but the purple gem is beautiful … and somewhat mysterious! I love it!
